Fractions can be compared, when their numerators or denominators are equal. Therefore, we can convert the given fractions into equivalent fractions with common denominators.
The denominators 7 and 8 have the LCM 56. Therefore,
4/7 = 4*8/7*8 = 32/56
5/8 = 5*7/8*7 = 35/56
Threfore,32/56 < 35/56 ==>
4/7 < 5/8
The denominators 7 and 8 have the LCM 56. Therefore,

We can compare the numerators if we make the denominators equal.
Take the L.C.M of 7 and 8 = 56
56/7 = 8. So multiply the numerator & denominator of 4/7 by 8.
56/8 = 7. So multiply the numerator and denominator of 5/8 by 7.
4/7 * 8/8 = 32/56
5/8 * 7/7 = 35/56
32/56 <35/56
So 4/7 <5/8
